This is my latest Piece of art work, I called it The Fallen, representing The Native American, I wanted to design it in a modern concept style. The Image is meant to capture the almost forgotten proud warrior which the Native Americans were.
In the first sketch I aimed to capture the pose and show some kind of character. I originally sketched the drawing form a life model. Then later refereed to my anatomy book to add some bulk to the character.
Adding some amour to the warrior, the wolfs head acted as a shoulder pad and the eagle feathers gave an authentic tribal look. The bird on top of his head was meant to look like a helmet.
Adding flesh tones.
Adding a greater depth to the skin tones, experimenting with contrast.
painting the Armour and feathers, I discovered it was more effective to apply thick amounts of digital, ink rather than lighter tones, it saved time this way. Then to finish the armor I would just either blend in light or dark tones to give it a finish.
Experimenting with background color.
I was influenced by a painting of a native american which I discovered, in this picture his face was painted white and black. I applied the same effect to my image.
The Buffalo was extremely important in Native American culture, I gave the warrior a smaller version of buffalo horns placing them in the headdress.
Experimenting with background.
Finally making a simple background which complimented the warrior, I wanted the tones to be earthly reflecting that of the character.
I was quite spontaneous with this design, I planned in my mind what i wanted but started drawing straight on to Photoshop after my initial sketch which was on paper. I was pleased with the result and learnt a lot about digital painting. However in future I will draw a detailed character sketch to save time. I also will start looking into how the industry save time with digital paintings and learn some tricks.
The following character sketches were drawn by a friend I painted in the backgrounds using Photoshop. this was a personal project which we decided to start. The concept is a bout a character achieving a personal goal. the mountains and sky are representations of the characters imagination.
In the establishing shot, it was important to identify the character and the setting, E.g storm clouds coming Oglethorpe shows theirs a momentous task at hand.
The mountain will be created in 3.d Maya, this is a rough painting of where it will be. This shot shows the task at hand.
Characters is determined he is walking with conviction to his goal.
Almost there, the sky reveals an element of hope.
just about to reach the top. The sun begins to peep out of the clouds. the storm is fading.
I have to note the samurai design was drawn by a comic artist, I copied the design a few years back, I started it of as a painting with ink, when I began to use Photoshop, I wanted to transform it into digital painting.
Original pencil sketch and painting.
using reference from the internet I attached a giant min gun which belongs to a helicopter, It made the samurai robot a hell of a lot more bad ass.
Working in with a great deal of red symbolizing japan and the Samurai. I wanted the paint style imaginative and not realistic.
mapping out all the blacks, I believe I added to much black which absorbed to much of the colour.
Final shot. Negative points, to much black. Positives, I achieved a concept art style which was trying for, the highlights really made the piece come alive.
These were concept sketches for an underwater world for a digital environment project.
I imagined a buried Aztec world, one of the mountains could have included a giant mask. the sea life was inspired by programs like Planet Earth.
Underwater concept, ancient ruins mixed in with bright and ubundent sea life.
I drew this for a college project, I had to create I dents for the British Museum this was a concept piece for one of the ideas. I painted the mask using Photoshop then merged in the original texture of the mask in Photoshop
.
Death Horse Inspired by one particular scene in Avatar, where their is a slow mo shot of the direhorses.
I mixed in so many features of different animals, I included the bulk of a male African Lion, note the broad front legs. The neck and main of a hyena. the eyes and teeth of a snake, ears of a wolf and the bony angular face of a T Rex. It was still meant to look like a horse, I thought of the idea when I was thinking how scary it would be if a horse was a carnivore. A potential lethal creature, fast powerful and a lot of teeth.
Looking at an anatomy book of horses, It gave me a better insight to structure.
The following articles is from a website called http://www.a4id.org/ . Its a charitable website which provide law for people who cant afford it in developing countries. The main picture they are using on their home page was taken by me when I was in Lijiang China.
Photography is a great passion of mine, It can help you understand a lot about people and culture. It can also be used for a large library of image reference for character design.
